Fix a Publish failed or Revise failed item

Tell a Publish failed from a Revise failed item, read the eBay reason, fix it, and retry one item or many.

What Publish failed and Revise failed mean

When GridX Connect sends a part to eBay and eBay refuses it, the part is flagged so you can find it, read why, put it right, and try again. There are two versions of this. Publish failed means the last attempt to list a part errored, so the part is not live. Revise failed means an attempt to push your edits to a listing that is already live errored. Both carry the real reason from eBay behind the flag — that reason names the specific field or rule that blocked the listing, which is almost always faster than guessing.

A failed publish leaves the part in your inventory untouched. Nothing is lost, and publishing again after a fix is safe.

This article covers a part in your inventory that eBay rejected on publish or revise. It does not cover rows that were skipped or dropped during a Bulk Upload (those never reached eBay), the red validation messages on the Add Part form (those stop the part before it is created), or FitX's own Push failed (that is FitX pushing compatibility to listings that are already live). Each of those has its own article, and the disambiguation table near the end tells them apart.

> [!NOTE] > The eBay connection lives on the Channels page in the sidebar, not in Settings. Publishing, revising and ending are admin actions — if the controls are missing rather than greyed out, you are signed in as a staff member.

Before you start

  • Open Channels and confirm the eBay channel shows Connected. If it does not, the part is probably not the problem — go to "When it is not the part's fault" below.
  • You need an admin account. Staff accounts cannot retry a failed publish or revise.
  • If you sell on more than one eBay marketplace, know which one failed before you start. A part can look healthy on the inventory row and still have a failed channel — open the part's channel panel, which is the only place the per-marketplace picture is visible.

Steps

  1. Open Inventory and click the red Errors chip in the attention bar. The list filters to the parts that failed. (You can also open Filters, choose eBay status, and pick Failed.)
  2. Open a failed part, or click its red status control on the row. Read the reason shown on the eBay status — it is eBay's own message.
  3. Fix what the reason names, on the part, and save your change.
  4. Retry: press the publish or revise control on the part — it reads Retry publish or Retry. The status moves to Publishing, then to the live state.
  5. Confirm it went live. If it fails again with the same message, stop and collect the details for support (see the last section).

Publish failed versus Revise failed

The two failures behave the same way — read the reason, fix the part, retry — but they are worded differently across the app, and the wording changes again depending on which screen you are on. They all point at the same part.

| Where you are | Publish failure | Revise failure | |---|---|---| | Errors chip (attention bar) | Errors | Errors | | Desktop table row | Error | (shown as Error with a revise reason) | | Mobile card | Failed | Failed | | eBay status filter | Failed | Failed | | The part's status banner | Publish failed | Revise failed | | A marketplace in the channel panel | Failed | Failed |

A revise failure only happens to a part that is already live: your local edit could not be pushed. The live listing keeps running while you sort it out.

Read the full reason

The reason is the useful part. Click the red status control on the row — Error on desktop, Failed on mobile — or open the part and read the reason on its eBay status banner. The full, untruncated message opens in the error view; this is where you read whatever eBay returned, word for word.

GridX Connect shows eBay's message exactly as eBay sent it. The app does not translate eBay's error codes into its own plain-English list, so what you read is authoritative but sometimes terse. Alongside the message the error view lists a set of generic checks to work through: Verify all required fields are filled, Check that category is valid for eBay Motors, Ensure images are uploaded (at least 1 required) and Confirm eBay account connection is active.

A few reasons point at a screen you can act on right away:

  • Images. GridX Connect will not send a part with no photo. You will see Needs images and an Add images button in place of Publish, and the line {n} of 24 uploaded · upload at least one image to publish. Add at least one image (up to 24 per part, JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF, under 10MB each), then retry.
  • Item specifics. GridX Connect fills eBay item specifics for you. If eBay's reason still names one it needs, open the part's Technical Details card — several specifics can be edited there, including Fitting Position, Material, OE Numbers, Brand Type, Interchange Part Number and Features. Free-form specifics that eBay lists are shown for reference only and cannot be edited in the app.
  • Business policy versus policy violation. These sound alike and are unrelated. If eBay's message mentions a shipping, returns or payment policy that is missing or invalid, those are set once per marketplace on the Channels page. If eBay says the item breaks a listing or product policy — a restricted or prohibited item, or a brand-owner (VeRO) takedown — that is an account matter you resolve with eBay, not by re-picking your shipping and returns policies.

If the reason opens blank, retry once. If it is still blank or unclear, collect the part's details and contact support rather than guessing at a cause.

Retry one part

Fix what eBay reported, save the part, then retry. Saving first matters: the retry re-sends the part's current data — it does not replay your earlier attempt — so your fix has to be saved before you press it. The control reads Retry publish (or Retry publish on {marketplace}) for a failed publish, and Retry or Retry Update for a failed revise.

When it works, the part shows Publishing while eBay processes it, then settles into its live state: Live on eBay on the part's panel, Published on the desktop row, and Live on the mobile card. The status updates on its own, and you can leave the page while it works.

One state that looks like a problem but is not: after you edit a live part, it is flagged Needs update in the attention bar and Needs revision on the part. That is not a failure — it means you changed something and eBay has not been told yet. The live listing is fine. Press Revise to push the change.

Fix and retry a batch

If the same problem hit many parts, fix one first and confirm it publishes before you retry the rest. That single check saves you re-running a fix that does not actually work across the whole group.

To retry a batch, click the Errors chip first (this filters the list and clears any earlier selection), select the failed rows or use Select all ... items in inventory, then press Publish in the actions bar. For failed revises, press Revise. There is no separate bulk "Retry" — re-running Publish or Revise is the retry. A very large run publishes the first 3,000 and shows Publishing the first 3,000 with {n} ready — re-run to publish the rest, so run it again to work through the remainder.

When it is not the part's fault

One symptom tells you the part is innocent: many parts — including ones that published fine before — all fail at once, with nothing changed on your side. That is an account-level problem, not an item rejection. Check these three in order:

  1. The eBay channel. Open Channels. It shows either Connected or Not connected — there is no separate "expired" or "reconnect" state in the app. If it reads Not connected, connect again on Channels (an admin task) and publish again. Reconnecting is simply running Connect eBay again on Channels.
  2. A spending cap or plan limit. If processing stops unexpectedly, check your usage and your cap first — it is the most common cause. When a cap or limit is hit, GridX Connect shows its own message (for example Spending limit reached or Plan limit reached), which is different from an eBay reason on a part. See the plans and usage article.
  3. An eBay selling limit. eBay applies its own selling and listing limits on your account. If your parts are fine but eBay keeps refusing new listings, check your limits inside eBay.

Do not re-do your photos or item specifics when every part fails together — that is the wrong tree. Fix the connection or the cap first.

Failures that look like this but are not

Several other "failed" messages live in the app. They are not eBay publish or revise failures, and each has a different fix.

| If you see | What it actually is | Where to go | |---|---|---| | Push failed (FitX) | FitX could not push compatibility to a listing that is already live | Add fitments with FitX | | Failed or Dropped rows on a Bulk Upload | A spreadsheet row that never reached eBay | Fix bulk upload rows that were skipped or dropped | | Valid price is required, Please configure your SKU prefix in Settings before processing SKUs. | Add Part form checks, before the part is created | Add a part | | Ended | The listing ended on eBay's side; the part and its data are still in inventory | Understand item statuses | | Needs revision / Needs update | You changed something and eBay has not been told yet; the live listing is fine | Revise a live listing |

If something goes wrong

  • Connect eBay first / Open Channels to link your eBay account. — no eBay account is linked. Connect on Channels, then publish again.
  • Needs images / No images / {n} of 24 uploaded · upload at least one image to publish — the part has no photo. Press Add images, add at least one, then retry.
  • The reason is blank or you do not recognise it — the text is eBay's own. Retry once; if it is still blank, note the part's SKU and marketplace and contact support.
  • Publishing does not finish — the status updates on its own and you can leave the page while it works. If it is still Publishing long after, refresh Inventory to see the settled state.
  • The Retry, Publish or Revise controls are missing — you are on a staff account. Publishing, revising and ending are admin-only.
  • It failed again after your fix — retry once after a fix; if it fails a second time with the same message, stop retrying and email support@autotek.io. Include the SKU, the part number, the marketplace, and the full verbatim error text (and any error code shown).
